Home News & Events Careers Week – St Johns Hospice Talk
Emma from St Johns hospice visited to talk about the jobs available in a hospice. Emma used a PowerPoint to explain who the hospice is, what they do and why they are important. Students reflected on a previous visit to the forget me not centre at the hospice and discussed that it is a centre for bereaved families and how they help people who have lost someone. Emma went on to explain the difference between a paid employee and a volunteer. Everyone then participated in a competition to identify and recall jobs which you may find in a hospice and to recall information about the presentation. Lots of jobs were recalled including carer, nurse, doctor, vicar, accountant. Students also recalled various details about the hospice including that they need to raise 12,000 a day and 3.6 million a year to run. There was an opportunity at the end of the presentation to ask questions, the following questions were asked:
Q: What special occasions do you celebrate at the hospice? A: Halloween, Christmas, easter and everyone’s personal special occasions like birthdays and weddings.
Q Do you wear a uniform? A: Not everyone does – doctors and nurses do but other people wear their own clothes.
Q: Who is the founder? A: Nuns funded the hospice.
Emma has since asked if any of our learners would like to participate in Work experience opportunities at the hospice Forget Me Not Centre, which is very exciting!
