3rd March 2025

Nurture Work Experience – Careers Week

Beckie Jones, our Futures Advisor worked with our Careers Lead, Rochelle, to hold a work experience afternoon for the learners on our Bluebell pathway.

The aim of the session was to introduce the young people to their regional futures advisor and to begin exploration around jobs, gaining a qualification for virtual work experience. The session ran as a carousel of activities for the young people to explore over the following stations:

Who works here? – Exploring symbols of jobs buried in sand and matching them to the large symbol workplace.

Where do I work? Symbol matching a job to place of work.

What am I? Matching a symbol to a word relevant to the job e.g. Butcher would have the symbol of raw meat, Decorator would have a paintbrush.

Feely box – pulling an item out of the feely box, identifying it / its use and matching it to the relevant job symbol and short descriptor of that job. E.g. toy bus – bus driver – a person who drives a bus.

What do I need? Velcro matching different objects someone would need in their job to the job who uses them.

Uniform matching – Adding a missing section to a picture of a work uniform and matching the person to the place they would work.

Feedback received:

‘The session was set up and ran by the schools’ careers lead and their regional futures advisor (External careers advisor). Classes visited the activities supported by their staff team to engage in the activities and adapting them as appropriate for each individual. The schools’ careers lead and regional futures advisor engaged with young people throughout the sessions to support the association between themselves and careers. Students explored, completed and responded well to the activities and stimuli relating to Careers throughout the session. What a great afternoon!’
