Careers Week – Police Visit

PC Gilllian Jackon came to visit Underley Garden to hold a presentation on the different job roles within a Police Headquarters and the different ways in which you can work for the police. She brought with her a fantastic visual Lego board with lots of Lego figures, representing the job available, from police workers on the front desk to the management team and everything in between.

She explored many of the different jobs and asked the learners what they thought each job entailed, then managing any misconceptions and giving a brief overview of the job specification.

Response team, Management, Front desk, Admin, Cleaners, Mechanics, Police dog handlers, Riot officers, Traffic officers, Firearms officers, Criminal Investigation department, Detectives, Custody officer, Crime scene investigation department, Professional development unit, Control room, Witness care department and many, many more!

The learners were surprised at how many different jobs were available and were held by a diverse bunch of people.

PC Jackson explained that the skills and qualities will differ between each job but the reoccurring elements are being calm, being a good listener and getting information from people.

She went on to explain that not everyone who works within the police are paid. She discussed with the learners that they have many police volunteers, who are motivated by just going good and contributing positively to their community.

PC Jackson gave the learners a clear message. ‘If you have a disability or a special need, you can still work for the police. There are so many jobs, that you are definitely still able to work there, if that is what you are interested in, and do a very important job!’
