Exciting Visitor

We had a very exciting visitor at Underley Garden; Tim Farron.

Tim Farron is the Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, and has been an MP continuously since 5 May 2005 and our young people were really looking forward to questioning him about his role in government and what his job tasks consist of.

Tim was given a tour of our wonderful grounds by Brooke, who introduced him to our pupils and staff members, whilst asking him questions such as ‘ Do you help people Tim?’, to which Tim replied, ‘I help people who might need health treatments and are struggling to receive it or if street lights are not working or being replaced. I have some little cases and some big cases. My passion is for for helping homeless people.

Tim then attended a Q&A with representatives from our Student Council. He was asked some fantastic questions which he answered gladly.  The questions included:

  • Have you met lots of important people?

Yes, I have met the late Queen, Rishi Sunak and John Barnes!

  • Why did you want to be a politician?

I didn’t think It would become my job but I watched a film at 14 years old, about homelessness and the next day I joined ‘Shelter’ charity and decided I want to help people with whatever they needed my help with.

  • What is your opinion on schooling?

Teachers are very important and change people’s lives. You can also meet lifelong friends/acquaintances at school.

  • How did you become the leader of the Liberal Democrats?

I used to be on the school council as a representative – It took me 5 attempts before I was elected!!

  • What do you do on an average day?

I write speeches, Letters, answer emails, visit farms/schools and businesses,  give awards and visit charities. I also run surgeries whereby my constitutes can come and see me and report andy issues.

Tim was so friendly and the young pople really enjoyed his visit. He is keen to work closely with Underley Garden and wished he had longer to stay and experience what we do! He named visits to schools and meeting the pupils is as a hightlight of his job!

Fab visit, enjoyed by all.
