World Environment Day

During World Environment Day, our young people took part in a variety of discussions and activities designed to help them understand how they can take action against climate change. This year’s theme, “Climate Action,” encouraged the young people to think about how they, both individually and as part of the school community, can make a positive impact on the environment.

The young people engaged enthusiastically in conversations about ways to support the environment within their classrooms and across the school. They shared many creative and thoughtful ideas, and we are excited to see the positive changes these initiatives may bring.

A range of activities was provided to help the young people explore environmental issues and solutions. These included walks around the local area to identify ways we can improve and protect our environment, as well as learning about the life cycles of plants growing within our school grounds.

The young people also participated in a “Clean the Ocean” challenge. A large tray was filled with water and natural materials such as leaves and twigs, along with plastic items representing ocean pollution, including bottle caps. Using tweezers, learners were challenged to remove the plastic waste and “clean the ocean.” This engaging activity was both enjoyable and educational, helping learners understand the impact that littering can have on marine environments.

A group of our young people took direct action by participating in a supervised litter-picking activity around the playground. Equipped child-safe litter grabbers, they worked together to collect rubbish and recycle as much as possible with support from staff.

Many young people took part in these activities and, during reflection sessions, discussed how they can make a difference both independently and collectively. They developed a greater awareness of their local environment and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting and caring for the world around them.
