Sports day is a very important and exciting event in the calendar at Underley Garden. It is time for our young people to get together and show of their talents in front of their peers, parents and teachers.
The field was over flowing with passion and enthusiasm, each young person wore their house group colour, so it was clear to distinguish between their house groups.
Matt, our PE teacher, had differentiated every station so that each activity was accessible to everyone, enabling all young people to gain points for their own house groups!
All young people engaged brilliantly; Here are what some of them had to say, when asked about thier favourite part of the day –
Kieran – ‘I liked running through the net at the assault course’
Kaizi – ‘I got a certificate; I am a winner’
Brooke – ‘Wellie race is the best because it goes high in the air, I can throw it 15 meters and that’s really far’
Harry – ‘All of it is the best’
It was delightful to watch all the young people helping and guiding each other as well as cheering and chanting throughout the day, everyone came together to support one another.
Parents, family members and carers came to support and enjoyed to day with one grandparent sharing her views on the day, ‘ just wanted to say how much I enjoyed sports day. I was so impressed with the whole day, the patience and commitment of the staff and their interaction with the children and visitors throughout the day was to be admired.’
Matt rounded everyone up at the end of the afternoon, where a huge thankyou was expressed for participation also it was emphasised how important it is for our wellbeing and mental health to participate within sports.
Each young person was addressed individually, whilst the rest of the school applauded as they made their way proudly to collect their sports day certificate and ice-lolly.
We collected and calculated the votes throughout the event, gathering all the winners from the tally sheets, to assemble the winning house, which was . . . . Adventure!!!! All young people from Adventure gathered together to receive a trophy.
What a fantastic day and a Special Mention to Matt Flynn, for going above and beyond to make sure the young people had an amazing, inclusive day to enjoy.
