Home News & Events LGBTQ+ Awareness Month
We celebrated LGBTQ+ awareness month following the vision of a world where everyone embraces diversity and can thrive. Through a wide range of activities, assemblies and discussion we promoted understanding and acceptance of individual differences.
Throughout June our young people have celebrated and raised awareness and expanded their knowledge during LGBQT+ Pride month.
Classes have taken part in assemblies held discussions around the importance of respecting the uniqueness of each and every one of us and treating others how we wish and deserve to be treated.
Stories have been listened to ‘Part of the Party’ engaged learners a story about celebrating pride, embracing differences, diversity and inclusivity. Sensory trays have been set up linking to the stories for exploration of textures colours and smells.
In assemblies the learners have discussed protected characteristics and explored the events held such as Lancaster Pride.
Lots of literature was used to explore different stories in support of LGBTQ+ awareness month, including, ‘Part of the party’. The story centres around Karri Koala who wants to go to the Mummy and Daughter Disco in town but lives with her two dads. After Karri realises that she’s not the only one who feels left out, she decides to call a meeting, and is amazed at how many of her friends turn up! Some of them don’t have mums, some of them have two mums, and some of them have been adopted. Pupils explored sensory trays with different textures, smells and animals related to the story.
We read the story “The Boy and the Rainbow” and explored through touch the different colours. They explored a variety of objects and textures linked to the colour in the story. Everyone enjoyed this activity and engaged until the end.
Pupils created their own train pictures and added the Pride Flag on the side making our own ‘Trainbows’.
We talked about how it’s important to respect other people when they are different and treat them how we wish to be treated. All pupils were really proud of their final ‘trainbow’ designs.
