Home News & Events Kendal Mountain Rescue visit
During Autumn term, learners focussed on ‘Emergency Situations’ as part of their PSHE curriculum. To help put their new knowledge on how to keep safe and respond safely to an emergency situation into practise, we invited in Kendal Mountain Rescue to speak with our learners about what they manage on a daily basis and allow the learners to demonstrate basic first aid. This gave learners the opportunity to practise, build their confidence, seek real-life scenario advice and also discuss the volunteer opportunities available.
Learners engaged in a talk from the team about the different types of rescues they perform such as crag and mountain rescues, flood rescues, and the first aid and emergency medicine they perform. The young people prepared lots of questions and spoke about their local area with the mountain rescue team, as we are located in an area which is on the outskirts of the Lake District. Learners asked them about their working hours, the training they do, and what kind of animals they work with. They then participated in an amazing roleplay with the team where a member of staff was rescued after an injury on the mountain. The learners they listened and followed the steps given by the team leader, to administer basic first aid and ‘rescue’ the member of staff, using a stretcher!
Tony from KMSR team said: ‘It’s a definite 10 from us. Students and staff were very welcoming and we enjoyed the morning and being able bring Mountain Rescue into the school.
