Members of our Student Council represented Underley Garden, in showing our respect and awareness for Remembrance Day. They visited the Cenotaph at St Mary’s Church, Kirkby Lonsdale meeting the vicar who delivered a short explanation as to why they were there and the importance of Remembrance Day. Students then laid their wreath on the Cenotaph and the vicar led a 2-minute silence. They then read a pray together for Remembrance day. Jessica volunteered to walk around each class, office and workshop, selling Poppies to raise money for the Royal British Legion. Whilst the representatives were in Kirkby Lonsdale, the rest of the school gathered at 11.00am to hold. 2 -minute silence, they demonstrated respect and understanding during this, managing really well. The student really enjoyed this experience. Classes also made poppy cup cakes to sell at the our on-site Cafe, decorated poppies, created a giant collaborative poppy and accessed a Remembrance Live Assembly which was hosted by the Royal British Legion. Some HT7 watched a video exploring some of the experiences soldiers and the public went through in WW1 and then reflected on this, thinking about the sacrifices people made and how the students would feel if they had to give up special things. They then wrote sentences describing what happens in key events of Remembrance Day using pictures to support them. The homework for this week, for some classes, was to complete a poem for remembrance day.
