To help students develop mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, we have studied Diwali. The students started off by learning about how Diwali is a Hindu celebration. To help them understand what Hinduism is, we talked about what places people can go to worship, pray or share their beliefs. We then looked at a Hindu temple and talked about how they are similar, but they are also different, but both are places are where people can go to worship their own Gods. The students then went on to learn about different parts of the Diwali celebration, we made Diwali inspired crafts and tried some of the food that Hindus eat as part of Diwali celebrations. The students engaged brilliantly in this, accessing activities, trying new things and participating in an assembly to broaden their understanding of the different faiths and beliefs.
