This term all of our young people were offered the opportunity to attend an employer engagement visit to the British Racehorse training centre (RTC), organised by Maria Appleton from Inspira and Jo Savage our Careers Lead. Seventeen of our young people took up the offer and thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Lauren and Molly (RTC staff) met us at the Centre and had organised a fun filled morning. The young people got to have a look around the centre, meet the horses and have a cuddle with them. They also listened to a talk on what the centre offers, different job roles within the centre and what is involved with each as well as exploring all the different equipment needed to care and train the horses.
After some delicious refreshments and snacks that were on offer, the young people were shown into the arena where they watched one of the horses being trained and learned further about the role of a horse trainer and a physiotherapist for horses. At the end of the session, the young people were given the opportunity to ask questions they had prepared for the visit. They asked lots of relevant questions and listened well when Molly and Lauren answered them, they were very impressed with the range and quality of the questions being asked.
Each young person completed a feedback sheet for Maria to tell her what they enjoyed the most, for many it was meeting and walking ‘washbear’ the Shetland pony. For others it was seeing the farrier in action changing the shoes of one of the horses.
We would like to thank all the staff at RTC who took the time to plan such a wonderful visit and look forward to organising another visit in the future.
