Throughout this academic year, Covid-19 has had a big impact on everything we do, as you all well aware. However, at Underley Garden we have not let this dampen our enthusiasm. We had great plans in place for our work experience opportunities that have had to be put on hold including placements at Milnthorpe Kennels and Cattery, Greenlands farm, The Fleece Inn, The Salon and Meet to eat at the local church to name a few.
So, as we couldn’t get our pupils to their work experience placements, we brought additional work experience to Underley Garden. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a variety of onsite work experiences including:
‘Hug in a mug cafe’
Pupils have taken part in various roles including barista, waiter/waitress, cleaner and preparing snacks and treats. The pupils in AB have been working hard on mastering the art in cooking eggs 4 ways (Boiled, fried, poached and scrambled). Unfortunately, this has also had to be put on hold for now, but we are counting down the days until we can be up and running once more.
Several of our KS4 and Post 16 pupils have been helping to keep our dining rooms Covid safe, they have been setting up the tables with drinks, cutlery and fruit and cleaning down the tables between sittings to help keep everyone safe.
Several pupils have been enjoying taking Maggie, Ollie and Willow out for dog walks around the school grounds. They have been working on using basic commands with the dogs to get them to sit, wait, walk etc. Having the dogs’ onsite has also supported learning in our Animal care sessions in Post 16.
We now have a librarian in both Holly Trees and Garden school; Kyle and Lauren have done a fantastic job of keeping the school libraries extra tidy and making sure all the books are put back in the right place.
Brooke has just recently started her work experience reading stories to the pupils in CB on a Friday afternoon in the Library. Brooke said she is ‘enjoying reading to the little ones’. She hopes to be a Teaching Assistant when she grows up.
‘iDEA online ICT work experience’
Doroteo has a keen interest and a natural flare with anything ICT. We found an opportunity with ‘iDEA’ which he has been working through, he has recently achieved a silver badge.
During all of the work experience placements the students and staff have followed the government guidelines issued around Covid 19.
Unfortunately we have also had to put on hold visits to the Red Cross Youth First Aid Training, Kendal Job Centre, Local Colleges and Kendal Fire Station. However, we have managed to organise a virtual visit with Kendal Fire station to give us an insight into Careers within the fire brigade, we look forward to this in the New Year. We will keep you posted on how our visit goes.
